BORROWING EQUIPMENT

Returning students, please be aware that some of our policies have changed!

Previous practices and use of the Studio’s “Loaner Logbook” have been discontinued. Tripods, grip mounts, small lights, microphones etc can still be loaned out to students, but now the equipment will only be released to you after "MCO Department Equipment Loan Agreement" form has been filled out properly (this will be done in person when you come in to pickup the equipment).

After you (the student) and the MCO Representative (the worker issuing the loan) have both signed and dated the agreement form we will then send you a confirmation email along with a copy of the signed agreement included.

We realize this policy and process is still a bit new and at times it can feel a little confusing so a copy of this agreement has also been linked here for your review: Studio Equipment Loan Agreement.pdf

LOAN PERIODS

Most devices are loaned out for 1-2 days at a time.

In some circumstances the loan may be extended up to one week (7 days) but this is not a common occurrence and may require additional information and approval from the MCO Technologist, Chairperson and/or Professor.

On the other hand, if the device you've requested is low in stock and/or in high demand at the time of your request we may ask if you’re able to return it by the EOD. Please note: It’s completely understandable if this is not something you can do, especially if you don’t live on campus.

PLAN IN ADVANCE

Requesting to borrow studio equipment for individual use or a small group can be done in one of two ways, but it’s strongly recommended that you do both of these things as we have limited support and availability:

1) Online: Send us an email outlining what you’d like to do before you come in person so we already have most of the details and potentially even have your requested items set aside for you too by the time you do come in the studio.

2) In person: walk in to the studio during the current semester’s scheduled “Open Studio Hours” and speak with the MCO Studio Assistant(s) on duty and/or the MCO Technologist about your request.

Skipping the online option and just coming in person doesn’t mean skipping this part of the process.
We’ll still need to go over the same information before you can borrow or use studio equipment.

CORRESPONDENCE

Use your Salem State email address

Only requests sent from an SSU email address will be acknowledged and/or accepted. Any/all requests sent from external email addresses such as your own personal email accounts will be flagged as external sender and sent to the Junk Folder automatically.

The email address you’re sending from should look like one of the following examples below:

s0123456@salemstate.edu or f_lastname@salemstate.edu or stu_flastname@salemstate.edu

ACCESS

Students currently enrolled in at least one Media and Communication course (MCO) may be granted access the studio and equipment.

Use of the studio and equipment for personal projects and/or commercial projects is not permitted. The studio and equipment are only to be used for the means by which they are provided. All content created must be done so for educational purposes only.

SAFETY & SECURITY

Both permission and supervision are required in order to use this space.

You may have noticed that a few other areas within the MCO Department have security cameras and the studio is no exception.

CC153, CC152, CC148 and CC134 all have security cameras installed with 24/7 video and audio surveillance. All cameras and warning signs posted are clearly visible. By entering/using any of these spaces you are also consenting to such monitoring and recording.

IDENTIFICATION

Student Clipper Card

Whenever using the space, even if it’s just quickly stopping by to fulfill a device request you must have your Student Clipper Card ID on you.

Staff and/or Student Workers will ask to see it and if you don’t have it with you, your request may be delayed.

RECORDING IN THE STUDIO

All students requesting to record in the studio are first required to follow our step-by-step guide from start to finish, at least once, before they may begin working on their desired project(s).

The guide can be found on the Student Desktop. It covers just about everything you need to know about using TASCAM Podcast Editor software and the TASCAM Mixcast 4. Once completed successfully you should be able to record, save, and export audio all on your own.

Take your time reading through each step and don’t feel pressured to memorize the entire process. The guide will always be there for future reference. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask for assistance. We’re always happy to help!
