Salem State: An Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)

As an institution, Salem State University welcomes and provides students with an inclusive environment to reach their professional and academic goals.

Due to this, Salem State receives a significant number of individuals from Hispanic and Latinx families and communities; this is why our institution intends to provide the best conditions and support to Latinx and Hispanic communities.

This page intends to contribute to Salem State faculty, staff, and administrators' understanding of how they can help to impact positively and support the University to become a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)

Salem State is currently classified by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) as an emerging HSI based on its student demographics. Here Download Here is how we conceive of ourselves as an emerging HSI.  SSU has Created a Roadmap to Servingness to prepare to become a Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution. The short summary is here. Download here.

A Note About Terminology.

*We use the term "Hispanic" throughout this page because it reflects the official federal term for the designation we are perusing. We realize, however, that the word "Hispanic" is not inclusive of all Latin American identities and experiences, nor does it account for the rich differences among them.

Throughout the University's written materials, we use a variety of terms for different contexts, including Latino, Latina, Latine, Latinx, Afro-Latino, Afro-Latina, Afro-Latine, Afro-Latinx, and more specific references such as Dominican, Guatemalan, and Puerto Rican. Part of becoming an HSI involves engaging in ongoing conversations about terminology and identity within our community. We look forward to continuing this dialogue.
