Getting your semester off to a smooth start

Hope your first full week of teaching is going well! Here are a couple of troubleshooting tips to help you start your semester on the right foot; sign up for our Teaching and Tech Tips newsletter Links to an external site. for more ideas like these in your inbox!

  1. Log in to Canvas (or Zoom) before starting a Zoom meeting. As of recently, you'll need to be logged in to Zoom to be recognized as host when you start a meeting. We recommend opening your Zoom meeting from inside Canvas (if you have integrated Zoom into Canvas) or logging into salemstate.zoom.us to start your meeting. Check out our Zoom How-to Guide to learn more about how to integrate it into your Canvas courses.
  2. Why can't my students see my course materials!? Check: are key parts of your course published?! (You'll know because they'll have a green circle with a check instead of an empty circle with a line). Modules Links to an external site., pages Links to an external site. and the course itself  Links to an external site.must be published for students to access it. Remember, in Canvas material must be green to be seen!
  3. To avoid this problem, we recommend checking your course using student view Links to an external site.either before or after publishing the course. Simply publish all the materials you want students to see, then switch to student view (glasses icon in the upper right hand corner of any screen in your Canvas course). This will reveal what is- and isn't- visible to students.
  1. Navigating Canvas' a new toolbar. Canvas has recently updated the look and feel of several components, including the toolbar for their Rich Content Editor (used to edit pages, assignments, etc.). If you have questions about how to use this updated toolbar, check out this 5-minute overview video Links to an external site., this index of frequently asked questions Links to an external site. in the Canvas Instructor Guide, or contact an SSU Instructional Designer Links to an external site. with your question.

That's it for the moment. We hope everything is running smoothly - if not, we encourage you to reach out to the Instructional Design Team Links to an external site. with teaching and learning questions - big or small!
