Your professor will tell you what kind of appointment you will have with your tutor. There are two ways students meet with tutors: synchronously or asynchronously.
A face-to-face appointment invites you to engage in conversation with a tutors in real life. You will meet with your tutor in the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center. The center is on the first floor of the Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons.
A synchronousappointment invites you to engage in conversation with a tutor in real time via the computer. This kind of tutoring is as close as you can come to having a session face-to-face. The Writing Center uses the WCOnline program for online tutoring. The program includes a chat function that allows the tutor and you to review, edit, and chat about a draft simultaneously. There are optional video and audio functions, too, like those you’d find in Skype or Zoom, which allow for a real discussion. The Writing Center can also use Zoom to facilitate these kinds of appointments.
An asynchronous appointment invites you to upload your essay drafts for tutor feedback. There is no interaction in real time with this kind of tutoring. The tutor will read your work, provide feedback directly on the document, and email the document back to you.
