Preparing for in-class discussion (read before class)
Take a moment to think about the ways that disabled people are thought about in the context of DCF practice. Link your thinking to the reading and screencast.
Note: You may want to write down a few notes regarding your thoughts on these prompts for your own reference. You do not need to submit your responses online prior to the class session.
A) Let's start by talking about models of disability.
In your practice, where do you see evidence of the medical model of disability? Where do you see evidence of the personal tragedy theory of disability? Where do you see evidence of the social model of disability? (may be in procedures, policies (office, state, federal), interactions with other systems/organizations, etc.)
B) Now let's talk about language, because language is power in our culture.
When/where do you encounter people/systems using person-first language?
When/where do you encounter people/systems using identity-first language. Is it used in a respectful way or a disrespectful way (e.g, supportive of disability pride or not)?
C) What other aspects of the reading/screencast stood out to you as they relate to your practice as a supervisor or manager? What did they make you notice about your practice and/or the policies informing your practice?
