A HyFlex course offered at Salem State University is a course that:

provides all students with necessary course materials (syllabus, readings, assignment prompts, quizzes, etc.) via Canvas
is designed so that students complete coursework in-person (via an SSU classroom on campus), synchronously online (attending live class meetings via Zoom), or asynchronously online (completing course requirements in a timely fashion without attending in-person or synchronous sessions)
treats student participation modalities equally; no preferential treatment given to in-person students (for example)
allows students the flexibility to choose how they complete coursework on a case-by-case basis. For example, a student may choose to attend in-class for one session, then attend the next class synchronously online.

Given the busy schedules and lives of many SSU students, a HyFlex course may appeal to individuals who are balancing various personal and professional obligations while completing coursework. A HyFlex approach also enables students who may not be in the immediate vicinity of SSU to enroll in courses (as well as allowing students who are in the area to keep up with work in the event of work or family travel, or other circumstances that make it difficult or impossible to come to campus).
