Welcome to Week 5!
This week’s Learning Objectives
- Graph functions using vertical and horizontal shifts
- Graph functions using reflections (flip) about the x-axis and the y-axis
- Graph functions using compressions and stretches
- Combine transformations
- Verify inverse functions
- Determine the domain and range of an inverse function and restrict the domain of a function to make it one-to-one
- Find or evaluate the inverse of a function
- Use the graph of a one-to-one function to graph its inverse function on the same axes
Instructor Comments
(Please note: this week's topics are NOT on the upcoming test.)
At the end of next week you’ll have access to the test that is due on Feb 25th. That will be a combination online test and paper test. You will need to show the work for the problems on the online test by creating and uploading a PDF file. You may also have a reference sheet for the test. The SI session on Thursday will be two hours to allow for extra time to review for the test.
This week we are back to chapter one for Transformation of functions (section 1.5) and Inverse functions (section 1.7).
Section 1.5 is a PDF file of notes. Section 1.7 has a PowerPoint video (please watch) and a PDF will also be available. There are a lot of animations in the video that should be easier to watch than look at it on paper. Section 1.7 will also have an additional set of notes separate from the PowerPoint, you will need to review.
When you work with transformations, make sure you have the “Very Important Chart” "After" and "Before" sheet handy. You will be allowed to have that sheet when you do Tests or quizzes. Take advantage of the videos available on the homework questions. If things get confusing, those should help clear things up.
