Welcome!
Welcome to the Canvas site for Professor Roopika Risam's ENG 830 course! This fully online course serves as an introduction to digital writing. As writing is increasingly going digital, it raises questions of how to communicate effectively in digital spaces and how it shifts our practices of writing and composing. Digital writing is one dimension of the field of digital humanities, which is my research area. As a result, I'm excited to be introducing you to it. You can learn more about me and my work on my webpage.
Navigating this Course
To navigate this course, please use the "Modules" link in the lefthand column of the screen. Each module corresponds with a week of our time together.
You can access the course syllabus here. Details of our weekly work together will be available in the module for each week.
Each Monday, you should begin with the welcome note in the module, which gives instructions for our work for the week. Generally, this work includes reading, experimenting with digital writing, and posting to our discussion board. During the last week, you will be developing and implementing a digital writing project of your own. A description of assignments is available on the syllabus.
Digital Studies Graduate Certificate
This course is also one of the core courses of the Digital Studies graduate certificate, which I coordinate. The core courses are ENG 713 - Digital Humanities and ENG 830 - Digital Writing. While this course emphasizes creativity and composition of digital texts like podcasts, videos, and webpages, ENG 713 - Digital Humanities explores the role of digital research methods in interpreting texts. You can learn more about the Digital Studies graduate certificate here, and I am happy to discuss how it might fit in with your goals!
