Reflecting on our conversations in class this week, please write a ~200 word reflection on the value of young adult literature. Make sure to draw on the literature and critical readings directly, either by using quotations or paraphrasing and citing specific arguments that authors are making (in MLA format).
Some questions to consider (you certainly do not have to answer all of them!):
- What are your thoughts on claims that YA lit is a trivial genre?
- What is the value of young adult literature for adults?
- How are writers using young adult literature to unveil structural inequalities and social problems in the U.S. today?
- How do young adult texts influence teaching and research?
- How might young adult literature help facilitate difficult but much-needed dialogue with our students, families and communities?
- In what ways can we understand young adult literature as a genre of resistance?
- How does engaging with young adult literature complement our understanding of political and social resistance and upheaval?
