This unique fellowship provides students with the opportunity to explore their strengths, values and passions in order to begin or continue forming their civic identity and individual role in working towards social change. The fellows meet twice a month for meetings, service projects, advocacy opportunities, leadership training and a chance to build a sense of community amongst the cohort. 2020-21

This year, Fellows facilitated a campaign to address food insecurity on campus by researching campus hunger; meeting with campus partners and members of a statewide Hunger-Free Coalition; and connecting with students in other states to learn how their institutions are addressing campus hunger. Their efforts included advocating for the Hunger-Free Campus Bill; contacting elected officials; collecting over 100 petition signatures requesting the university’s public support for the bill; meeting with the SSU President who agreed to support the bill; holding an event during Advocacy Week; developing student resources; and encouraging faculty to include food insecurity resources in their syllabi.

2019-20

In it's second year, Salem State's Civic Engagement Fellows were deeply engaged in leadership training, advocacy efforts, and community engagement on the North Shore. Our returning fellows played an essential role in preparing Day of Service O-Team leaders, training them on how to build community and support first-year students while staying engaged in their community service project. Since then, the cohort of fellows has attended multiple trainings, enjoyed a host of SSU events as a group, and volunteered in Beverly, Peabody, and Salem.
